古池の句の弁:正岡 子規(382-441)/469

蛙は和歌に詠めども極めて少し。

Frog is very little Domo wife to poetry.

(『万葉』にいふ「かはづ」は今の蛙に非るべし)連歌にも少きこと前にいへり。

("Kahazu" in "Manyo" should not be a frog now.) I went to Renga a little before.

貞派の句には多少これあるも、蛙の趣を詠みたるにあらねば蛙の句とするに足らず。

There are some frog phrases, but if you don't read the frog's taste, it's not enough to make it a frog phrase.

その蛙の句は古池を初といふて可なるべし。

The frog phrase should be said to be Furuike's first.

今連歌以来古池の句に至るまでの蛙の句を列ねて、蛙に対する観念の変遷を知らしむるに便せん。

It is a good idea to list the phrases of frogs from the Renga to the phrase of Frog Poem to let you know the transition of the idea of frogs.

古池や蛙飛びこむ水の音 芭蕉

Frog Poem and the sound of water rushing into the frog Basho

 右はほぼ時代の順序に従ふて記したる者、かつ大かたの句は悉く挙げたるなり。

The person on the right is a person who wrote in the order of the times, and most of the phrases are listed.

悪句また悪句、駄洒落また駄洒落、読んで古池の句に至りて全くその種類を異にするの感あらん。

Bad phrases and bad phrases, puns and puns, and reading Furuike's phrases, I don't feel that the types are completely different.

芭蕉の自ら感じたるもここなり。

This is where Basho feels himself.

少くとも芭蕉は蛙なる一動物の上に活眼を開きたり。

At least Basho opens his eyes on a frog animal.

しかれども芭蕉が、蛙を以て特に雅致ありて愛すべき者と思ひたり、と誤解する莫れ。

However, Basho misunderstands that he is a lovable person with a frog.

蛙は鶯の如く愛すべき者に非ず、時鳥の如くなつかしき者に非ず、雁の如くあはれなる者に非ず、秋鳴く虫の如く淋しき者に非ず、故に古来の歌人も蛙を詠むこと鶯、時鳥、雁、虫の如く多からざりしなり。

A frog is not a lovable person like a warbler, a nostalgic person like a bird, a lonely person like a goose, a lonely person like an autumn crying insect, and therefore an ancient singer is also a frog. It's like a warbler, a bird, a goose, and a bug.

ひとり芭蕉に限りて百鳥百虫に勝りてこれを愛すといはんや。

Only Basho alone can beat Hyakutori Hyakumushi and love it.

かへつて余り美しくも可愛くもなきその蛙すらなほ多少の趣致を備へて、俳句の材料たるを得ることを感じたるなるべし。

You should feel that you can get the material for haiku with a little frog-like taste that is not too beautiful or cute.

蛙既に雅致ありとせば、鶯、鵑、雁、虫は言ふに及ばず、あらゆる事物悉く趣致を備へざらんや。

If the frog already has a grace, the bush warbler, the warbler, the geese, and the insects are not to mention, and all things are sought after.

芭蕉が蛙の上に活眼を開きたるは、即ち自然の上に活眼を開きたるなり。

Basho opens his eyes on the frog, that is, he opens his eyes on nature.

その自然の上に活眼を開きたる時の第一句が蛙の句なりしは偶然の事に属す。

The first phrase when opening a live eye on the nature is a frog's phrase, which belongs to a coincidence.

俗宗匠輩がこの句を説くに、特に蛙に重きを置くは固より取るに足らざる謬見のみ。

When the professor of the profession preaches this phrase, the emphasis on the frog is only a trivial audience.

 古池の句が俳諧の歴史上に珍しき句なることは、前に挙げたる例句によりて知るを得べし。

Frog Poem's phrase is a rare phrase in the history of haiku, you should know from the example phrase given above.

されば芭蕉の俳諧はこの一句を限界として一変せり。

By the way, Basho's haiku changes completely with this phrase as the limit.

従つて当時の俳諧界もまたこの一句を中軸として一転せり。

Therefore, the haiku world at that time also changed around with this phrase as the center.

縦令事実はしからずとするも、芭蕉は爾か感ぜり。

Although the fact of the vertical order is unknown, Basho feels like a god.

故に芭蕉の将に死せんとして門人その辞世の句を問ふや、芭蕉答へて曰く

Therefore, when he asked Basho's general about his death poem, he said to Basho's answer.

昨日の発句は今日の辞世、けふの発句は明日の辞世、吾生涯いひ捨てし句は一句として辞世ならざるはなし。

Yesterday's phrase is today's death poem, Kefu's phrase is tomorrow's death poem, and my lifelong abandoned phrase must be resigned as one phrase.

我辞世いかにと問ふ人あらばこの年頃いひ捨て置きし句いづれなりとも辞世なりと申し給はれかし。

If anyone asks me how to resign, I'll just throw it away around this age and say that it's a resignation.
